How to Choose a Real Christmas Tree in 8 Easy Steps

We’ve all been there – It’s almost Christmas time and we still don’t have our tree up! Many of us find ourselves in the predicament of going with a real tree or a synthetic tree. If this is your first time deciding on getting a real Christmas tree, we’ve provided you with some answers to our most frequently asked questions, and things to consider when buying a real Christmas tree. Enjoy!

1.   Where should you place the tree? No matter how big or small your home is, a real Christmas tree can dress up any room if it’s done the right way. Think about if you’d like your tree to be seen through the windows of the home as people walk by; if you want it to stand out when guests visit your home; or if you want it somewhere where it will always catch your eye as you’re going in and out of the home.

2.   How big should it be? Measure the height of your ceilings and the parameter of the space that you can place your tree. Take into consideration the space needed for the tree base and a tree skirt, if needed.

3.   Where can you buy it? Explore which stores and nurseries sell Christmas trees in your neighbourhood. Some department stores like Canadian Tire, Home Depot, and Lowe’s have great deals on trees leading up to December.

4.   Which tree species do you like? Each type of tree carries with it its own scents, different branches, and a specific overall look. Below are the most commonly chosen Christmas tree species:

5.   What to look for in a tree? Aside from the species, make sure to look for a tree that is fresh. You can tell if a tree is fresh by looking closely at its branches. If you find a tree with brown needles that easily fall off when you touch the branch, then the tree is not fresh. You should be looking for a tree that has needles that are a bright green and when you tug on a branch they are still tightly fastened, this shows signs of a healthy tree.

6.   What do you need to take with you when purchasing a tree? Make sure that when you go to pick up the tree, you have all that you need:

  • A tape measure – you’ll need to make sure that the tree you like is the right size for your space.
  • Gloves – So that you don’t come back with scratches all over your hands from the needles, make sure you bring heavy gardening gloves with you when transporting the tree in and out of your car.
  • Old bed sheets – place old bed sheets on the floor of the car if you’ll be transporting your tree inside your car. Otherwise, it will be a nightmare to remove all the needles and dirt.

7.   How to set it up at home? Here’s the exciting part. After searching for and finding your favourite tree, you finally have it at home. Often times, it’s intimidating to decorate the tree – so here are some things to consider to help you get started:

  • Choose a theme: Do you want your tree to be traditionally filled with ornaments of all shapes and colours? Do you prefer a more modern white and silver theme? Do you want to try something different like a silver and blue pattern? Get creative – this is the fun part!
  • Prepare your ornaments.
  • Add your lights.
  • Make sure you have a tree base that will work with your tree.

8.   How often should I water the tree? The first day that you bring in a new tree to your home, you may have to water it every couple of hours. For the first week, it is recommended that you water it every single day. After that, you can adapt to watering it once every week. Be careful not to get water on the lights; you should be watering the tree from its base.

Once all that is done, take a step back, look at the lights glistening on the tree, the ornaments hanging beautifully, and the unbeatable fresh scent of having a real Christmas tree inside your home!
